He might suddenly take up an interest in gardening that he never had before, for example, if he's ridden by some variety of plant spirit. As the rider gains more control over the host, the gardening might take an unusual bent, toward a particular species of plant, for example. Of course, it's the exact same species that birthed the riding spirit.

なにか植物の精霊にとりつかれたとすると、憑代は突然、今まで見向きもしなかったガーデニングに興味を持ちはじめるだろう。精霊に心身の制御を奪われてゆくにつれ、そのガーデニング趣味は異常な方向に高じてゆくだろう——例えば、ある種の植物以外には目もくれないとか。その植物とはもちろん、とりついた精霊が生まれた植物と同じ種というわけだ。

バジルや松の精霊なら、古アパートのベランダにバジルのプランターを山ほど置いて床が抜けるとか、盆栽にいたずらした子供を折檻して重傷を追わせたりとかするのかもしれない。たしかに迷惑だ。これがシイタケの精霊だったりしたらどうだ。部屋の中で種菌の栽培なんか始めてしまうだろう。部屋の中にキノコが生えたっておかまいなしだ。なんという恐ろしさだ。新聞勧誘員もドア開けた瞬間に逃げだすぞ。

だがこれはまだ恐怖の序の口にすぎない、とPreviewは語る。

If the spirit stays in place for long enough, the host can be completely lost to its rider. The Urged comes to believe that spirit-driven actions are her own, and that the changes the spirit has wrought on her body are a natural part of herself. She might come to enjoy and look forward to the things that the spirit urges her to do. The human is effectively gone and a new — and often dangerous — creature is born.

この状態が続くと、やがて憑代は完全に精霊に乗っとられてしまう。Spirit-Urgedはいまや精霊にそそのかされてやったことを自分の本心からやったことと信じて疑わず、精霊が肉体に加えた変化を生まれつきそうだったかのように受けいれはじめる。これが事実上人間としての終わりであり、新たな——そしてしばしば危険な——生き物の誕生である。
