[V:tR] Bloodline: Morotrophians（モロトロフィアン）

【White Wolf Online, February 21】morotrophiaというのは、紀元4世紀にキリスト教会が建てた、精神病院のはしりのような施設の名前であったらしい。

Ducange, in his “Commentary on Byzantine History”, states that among the thirty-five charitable institutions in Constantinople at the beginning of the fourth century there was a morotrophium, or home for lunatics.

デュ・カンジュは著書『Commentary on Byzantine History』の中で、紀元4世紀初頭のコンスタンティノープルにあった35の慈善施設の中に、morotrophiumすなわち精神を病んだ人々の家があった、と述べている。— Catholic Encyclopedia: Asylums and Care For the Insane

morotrophiumの複数形はmorotrophiaとなる。これに「…の専門家」「…に住んでいる人を意味する -ian がついてmorotrophianだ。

morotrophiumが建てられた時期については、ミズーリ州のルーテル教会が発行している教会だよりにもう少し詳しく載っている。典拠が不明なのだが引用しておこう。

... Christians built the world's first hospital in A.D. 369. By 750, there were Christian hositals across Europe. They built noscomia (for the sick only), morotrophia (for the mentally disturbed), gerontocomia (for the aged), orphanotrophia (for orphans), brephotrophia (for infants) and typholocomia (for the blind).

クリスチャンの病院でなければもっと古くからありそうなものだがともかくSchmidt氏はこう書いている。

しかし病院の歴史を調べている場合ではなかった。Morotrophiansの話だった。初めてこの名を見たとき、Malkovianまがいの【自主規制】bloodlineなのかと思っていたが、更新を見て目から鱗が落ちた。

Institutionalizeは「施設に収容する」の意なので、誰かを監禁する際に効果を発揮するDisciplineかもしれない。つまり「中の人」ではなく「外の人」なのだ。
